Presenters:
Alicia Lucksted received her Ph.D. from the Clinical/Community Psychology program at University of Maryland College Park in 1997. She completed a Post Doctoral Fellowship at the Center for Mental Health Policy and Services Research at the University of Pennsylvania before coming to the University of Maryland, Baltimore Center for Mental Health Services Research in 1998, where she an assistant professor of Psychiatry on the research faculty. Her professional work focuses on applied research towards improving public mental health services for people with serious mental illnesses, self-help interventions among mental health consumers and their family members, qualitative methods in mental health services research, and the welfare of gay, lesbian, bi, and transgender people in the mental health system. She has published numerous academic articles from her work, and conducts education/training workshops for professionals, consumers, and others on these topics.
Paula Lafferty is a consumer and survivor of both the public and private mental health systems in Maryland. In 1999 she founded with others Hearts & Ears, Inc., which is a consumer support and advocacy program for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people with mental health issues. She remains its Director. She believes that with the right supports, GLBT people with mental illness can overcome and lead fulfilling and productive lives.
